Ways to Support ELC

Ways to Support the ELC

There are many ways you can meaningfully
support stronger environmental laws in Alberta. Support the ELC.

Your gift enables Albertans to have access to crucial information to protect Alberta’s environment. When you support the ELC, environmental decision-making can be stronger and more equitable for all Albertans. Less than 25% of Canadians claim their charitable donations on their tax return; you may want to make sure you know the tax benefits of your charitable giving. To easily calculate the tax savings for your donation of any amount, use the CanadaHelps tax calculator at: www.canadahelps.org/taxtime/

Other Ways to Support Our Work

Multi-year gifts

Gifts of securities

Gift in your will

Tribute and memorial gifts

Corporate partnerships

It’s difficult to plan and assess change in a single year. Three to five year commitments give us the flexibility to plan, assess and evolve programs as needed. It also reduces administrative costs and attracts future support as many foundations require matching funds. Your multi-year gift is a meaningful way to support the Environmental Law Centre. We are able to accept gifts of stocks and securities. There are many tax benefits to donating securities. You may also consider making a gift of securities to the Environmental Law Centre Endowment at the Edmonton Community Foundation. A bequest in your will is one of the most significant ways you can support a legacy of change. Laws and policies don’t change overnight – they are a lifetime’s work. You will leave a meaningful legacy with a planned gift to the Environmental Law Centre. You may also consider making a bequest to the Environmental Law Centre Endowment at the Edmonton Community Foundation. Honour a loved one or a special occasion such as anniversary, birthday or other event with a donation to the Environmental Law Centre. Memorial gifts in honour of your loved one after they have passed away is a special way to honour their love of nature and the environment. We would be pleased to assist you with honouring special occasions or your loved one’s memory. We welcome the opportunity to partner with corporations who understand their social responsibility to protect Alberta’s valuable resources and long-term prosperity by collaborating on special projects or providing sponsorship opportunities. Opportunities to sponsor include specific projects or sponsorship of events such as Green Regs and Ham.

Make the Most Out of Your Charitable Tax Credits!

Support your favourite cause and you can receive as much as 50% back through charity tax deductions (if you are an Alberta resident). See the difference that charitable tax credits make when you donate to your favourite charity, and claim your charitable donation receipts.

Not only is giving to charity a great way to make a difference to your favourite cause, but when you claim your charitable tax credits you can also take advantage of federal and provincial government tax incentives. Here are just some of the ways that giving charitably might pay off for you!

Federal and provincial tax incentives add up

By donating to your favourite charity, you may receive as much as 50% of the amount you donated back at tax-time (if you are an Alberta resident). Calculate how much you can claim with our Charitable Tax Credit calculator below.

Donate securities, eliminate the capital gains tax and get a larger tax credit

Securities are the most efficient way to give charitably. When you donate publicly traded securities (stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc.) directly to your favourite charity, you can eliminate the capital gains tax as these securities are sold, and still receive a tax receipt for their full market value. Plus, your charity also gets the full value of the securities.

Consider carrying donations forward for larger charitable tax credits.

You do not have to claim all of the donations you made in the year they were made. When you donate over $200, you are automatically eligible to carry them forward and claim them on your tax return for any of the next five years. This flexibility means that the unclaimed carry forward portion may qualify for a larger tax deduction for you, in the future.
