WEBINAR: Native Grasslands Management and Protection

The webinar on native grasslands explored the environmental importance of Alberta’s grassland ecosystems and the legal frameworks that influence how they are managed and protected. The discussion highlighted that Alberta’s native grasslands are among the most threatened and biologically diverse landscapes in Canada, providing critical wildlife habitat, supporting species at risk, and serving as significant carbon sinks. The webinar also explained how sustainable grazing practices can contribute to grassland conservation and examined the different grassland regions found across southern Alberta.

The presentation then focused on the patchwork of provincial laws, regulations, and policies that apply to native grasslands, including protected areas legislation, land-use planning tools, municipal planning authority, and regulatory systems governing industrial development. Speakers discussed how legislation such as the Public Lands Act, Alberta Land Stewardship Act, and Municipal Government Act interact with energy development, grazing, recreation, and reclamation requirements. The webinar concluded with a discussion around policy gaps and recommendations for a more comprehensive provincial grasslands policy focused on measurable conservation outcomes and minimizing long-term disturbance.
