Environmental Rights and Principles

New environmental legal principles and rights are redefining policy and regulation. Uncover how laws can integrate core environmental law principles of precaution, public participation, polluter pays and pollution prevention. Environmental rights, environmental justice and rights of nature all can play a role in how we reach sustainable development.

About the Topic

Strong environmental laws are built on foundational principles and rights that ensure accountability, sustainability, and equity.

At the Environmental Law Centre, we champion legal frameworks rooted in essential values like the precautionary principle, polluter-pays policies, cumulative impact assessments, and intergenerational equity.

Our research explores how these principles evolve to address emerging challenges like greenwashing, carbon capture tax credits, and the Federal Impact Assessment Act. By identifying gaps in Alberta’s legal system—such as limited public participation, insufficient oversight, and whistleblower protections—we provide actionable insights to drive meaningful reform. Together, we’re working to shape environmental laws that protect Alberta’s natural resources and ensure long-term sustainability for all.
