Not your typical lawyer: Find out why one of our team chooses charity and why you should too
I’ve been an environmentalist for a lot longer than I’ve been a lawyer. When the ELC was born in 1982 I was chasing frogs for the grade school science fair. In a way I straddled the environmental divide – old enough to have grown up with abundant nature, young enough to have ingrained concerns. So like countless easterners in the 1990s I headed for the frontier. By the time I reached Alberta the land and water crunch was on. Thankfully I found the Environmental Law Centre. It lets me contribute my professional skills to something that I personally believe in. This is meaningful work.
Pick any environmental issue that concerns you. I bet that it has a legal element. This isn’t a coincidence. Your issue might have nothing to do with “radicals,” “reviews” or “rollbacks.” The universal challenge is that our legal system was created before the environment hit the public conscience. Fortunately it’s a system that allows for improvement. That’s a lifetime’s work.
Advancing environmental law takes a collective effort. So it should, because these advances contribute to our shared quality of life. If we owe anyone though, it is environmental charities and their supporters. We need to ensure that this legacy continues. 30 years later, I’ll be one of 30 new donors. I hope that you’ll join me.

ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CENTRE:
The Environmental Law Centre (ELC) has been seeking strong and effective environmental laws since it was founded in 1982. The ELC is dedicated to providing credible, comprehensive and objective legal information regarding natural resources, energy and environmental law, policy and regulation in Alberta. The ELC’s mission is to educate and champion for strong laws and rights so all Albertans can enjoy clean water, clean air and a healthy environment. Our vision is a society where laws secure an environment that sustains current and future generations.
As a charity, the Environmental Law Centre depends on your financial support. Help us to continue to educate and champion for strong environmental laws, through tools such as our blog and all of our other resources, so that all Albertans can enjoy a healthy environment.
