29 Nov 2024 at a Glance
Over the last year, you have been a significant part of our success—reading, engaging, sharing and giving to the Environmental Law Centre, Alberta. Here is a snapshot of our year together and our efforts to inform you about important topical issues.
Drought Watch in Alberta
This year, the ELC ran a series on the province’s drought concerns. The drought’s effect was apparent with water emergency announcements. The series underscored the need to secure and protect our environment in the face of drought. Alberta’s water challenges will require ongoing adaptation in law and policy to ensure aquatic systems are sustained. Here are some of our drought series posts.
- Drought Watch 2024: Wetlands & Drought Management in Alberta
- Drought Watch 2024: Forests and Drought Management in Alberta
- Drought Watch 2024: Recent Drought Management Responses in Alberta include the introduction of Bill 21: Emergency Statutes Amendment Act
- Drought Watch 2024: Grasslands and Drought Management in Alberta
Pollution and Contaminated Sites
We also released a research paper on pollution and contaminated sites. The report examined the quality and clarity of laws and policies that regulate contaminated sites. The ELC’s law reform recommendations seek to ensure the effective and timely remediation of contaminated sites, ensuring the safety of these properties and providing clarity on how risks are managed when contaminated sites are redeveloped. With the report’s release, a webinar was held where you asked intriguing questions about contamination laws and policies.

Summer Legislative Updates: Greenwashing and Carbon Taxes
In the summer, we assessed the proposed amendments to the federal Impact Assessment Act alongside the release of the Alberta Utilities Commission’s (AUC) report regarding renewables. The report highlighted that rather than lifting the moratorium on renewables, it was merely shifted, leaving many questions and barriers to important climate mitigation actions. We analyzed ongoing regulatory and environmental concerns while reviewing the implications for renewable energy development in the province.
Wildlife wasn’t left out, with a review of the draft regulatory details to protect Woodland Caribou in Alberta. The ELC closed the summer with comments on the proposed bills regarding carbon capture tax credits, greenwashing, environmental racism and finally, our blog on Edmonton’s River Valley draft Area Redevelopment Plan.
